The new web site for Barack Obama has a comment section where you can submit your suggestions on how they should be doing things. Below is my submission, which I am also sending to my Senators:
I think one of the first projects that the Obama-Biden administration should take on is delivering the universal health care plan. With 10.1 million people unemployed and many companies struggling to keep their doors open, American's at least deserve the peace of mind of knowing that their health is not on the line as well. Many opponents of the universal health care system will likely be greatful for this policy if heaven forbid they should find themselves without an employer backed plan.
In August, I found myself in the position of being unemployed, uninsured, and pregnant. I was appalled when I went to shop for self insurance and was rejected time and again for having a "pre-existing condition". Even my Doctors justified the logic of denying a pregnant woman and her unborn child health insurance. "After all, you don't know if that baby is going to cost $5,000 or $1,000,000" they said.
Fortunately, I found a job within 90 days for a company based in Washington state--where I am told there is legislation in place to prevent insurance discrimination against pregnant women. I was lucky. Millions of Americans depend on their health care coverage for day to day survival.
Well being should not be an employee benefit!
